Elmwood Park is working to educate people driving and walking about the need to be safe when travelling.
The borough kicked off its Street Smart NJ campaign with a news conference May 15. The campaign compliments safety improvements New Jersey Department of Transportation made to Route 4. Last year motorists hit 23 people, killing four. So far this year, six people have been struck, one of whom was killed.
“Each and every one of us has a role to play in making our streets safer,” Mayor Golabek said in a news release. “Drivers need to slow down, stop for people crossing and avoid distractions. If you’re out walking, cross at intersections and wait for the walk signal or green light. Following these common sense safety tips can help save lives.”
