NJ Safe Passing Law Resource Center Launches
The New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition, in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, has launched the NJ Safe Passing Law Resource Center. The new website aims to help raise awareness about the law.
New Jersey's safe passing law went into effect March 1, 2022. It is one of the strongest and most comprehensive laws of its kind in the country. The law aims to prevent fatalities, injuries and near misses that occur when motorists unsafely pass vulnerable road users, which includes people walking, biking, riding a scooter or using a mobility device (like a wheelchair).
The law requires drivers to approach vulnerable road users with caution. If they are able to, they must change lanes or provide at least 4 feet when passing. If there is not sufficient room to move over, drivers must reduce their speed to 25 mph and be pared to stop and wait to pass until it is safe to do so.
The new online Resource Center includes a social media toolkit that can be used to raise awareness about the new law and its requirements. It also includes information about the law, a frequently asked questions page and other resources.
